I am a full-time gardener. I know how hard it is to see plants dying. We need food to survive; plants also need food to stay healthy and produce flowers, fruits, and enough oxygen. After being a gardener, I learned that we do not need to spend a lot of money to serve food for our lovely in-house friends. We can make it at home with some leftovers. So today, I will share 5 homemade fertilizers that I use for my plants to stay healthy.
Eggshells:
Eggshells are one of the best homemade fertilizers for plants. They are easy to get, and almost every house uses them daily. We need two things – eggshells and water. Eggshells produce enough calcium along with some other nutrients like potassium and phosphorus. It helps plants to grow easily.
How to prepare:
Collect eggshells or just save your eggshells. Rinse them and let them dry for one day. Then crush them into small pieces, or you may use a blender to make them like a powder. Use water and boil the crushed or powdered eggshell. After boiling, wait overnight. Use the eggshell-infused water to water your plants.
Green Tea or Tea:
If you are a green tea person in the morning, it’s good news. Instead of throwing away your spent tea, you can use it to make homemade fertilizer. Tea leaves help plants to grow faster and stay healthy.
How to prepare:
It is not difficult to prepare tea leaves for plants. Just use the tea leaves directly in the soil, or you may use them to water your plants. But do not use hot tea leaves or any sweeteners or creamy tea leaves. Do not use the wasted tea leaves if you add sugar to your tea. It will hurt your plants. Only cooled, unsweetened tea leaves can be used as fertilizer. Green tea leaves are better than others but not mandatory. You may use normal tea leaves as well.
Fruits and Vegetable Waste:
Almost every house has these wastes. Fruits and vegetable waste create great fertilizers for indoor and outdoor plants. This is one of the easiest fertilizers you can make at home. Fruits and vegetables waste produce nitrogen, phosphorus, and sodium that make great food for every plant.
How to prepare:
You do not need to take a lot of time to make it. Just use a bucket or any pot to save your fruit and vegetable waste. Use a small amount of water to process it. After 2-3 days or at least one day, your compost will be ready to use. It can be used directly in the soil at a rate of 1 to 10 (1 part fertilizer and 10 parts soil).
Potato Water:
Who does not love potatoes? I think nobody! Almost every day, we use potatoes in some of our meals. Potato water is great for both indoor and outdoor plants. It gives your plants the food they need to grow. .
How to prepare:
Simply boil the potatoes and let them cool before using. Or just keep it for one day; the next morning, the water is ready to use. Take note that salted boiled water cannot be used. So, make sure you boil potatoes without salt.
Epsom Salt:
Well, not everybody uses Epsom salt, but if you have a garden, it should be on your list. Epsom salt is really important for your plants. It’s a source of the essential mineral magnesium, which is crucial for plant growth.
How to prepare:
You do not need a lot of Epsom salt; use 1 tablespoon of salt with nearly 4 litres of water. Stir until the salt fully dissolves. Or you may leave it aside for a few hours. Water your plants using Epsom salty water. Keep close attention to your plants over a few weeks; you will notice huge changes in your plants. It helps to grow greener leaves, strong stems, and more blooms.
I used these homemade fertilizers to make my plants happy and healthy. You can use them too. These fertilizers don’t cost you a lot but can have good benefits. But besides using homemade fertilizers, you should also use other fertilizers because plants need all of them.
Another thing I must share with you is that “Too much is not good”. Although these are easy to make at home, do not use them too much. It will damage your plants.
That’s it for today. Happy planting!
